Ember Days

Many may know of the existence of Ember Days, but how many know the meaning and history of them?

The Ember Days (Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday) occur four times per year, in conjunction with the four seasons. Traditionally speaking, they are days of fasting and abstinence.

A post on Rorate Caeli from way back in 2008 gives a good account of the Ember Day’s history, meaning and significance, particularly how today’s culture, so zealous for being good stewards of the earth, is missing the element of Supernatural Mysteries, which Ember Days embodies in the very nature of it’s liturgical meaning.

Help resurrect the pious observation of Ember Days, a tradition which goes back to the earliest times of the Church.

Fisheaters also has a good summary of Ember Days.

Further, Fr Bede wants you all to know that Ember Saturday will be celebrated at St Elizabeth in Cleveland at 9am. All of the readings will be read at the Mass. This is a good time to participate in our patriarcal history.

Tuesday Morning Mass Time

There is a time change effecting the Tuesday morning Low Mass at St Stephen. Fr Bede announced this on Sunday.  The mass is now at 6:45am.

Saturday Latin Mass Pictures

As was posted before, Fr. Bede is now offering a Latin low Mass on the Saturdays of the month, EXCLUDING FIRST SATURDAY, at St. Elizabeth of Hungary church on Buckeye Road in Cleveland.

The Mass was celebrated at Mary's side altar. A good number of Faithful attended, and the newly ordained Canon Matthew Weaver assisted in choir, after which he celebrated his own private Mass. St. Elizabeth's is a beautiful church, as you can see in the pictures. It is a fitting environment for The Most Beautiful Thing This Side of Heaven.

But, thanks to a Friend who forwarded us the map of the Marathon for this Sunday, May 20, 2018. It appears there should be no problem getting to St. Stephen this time. The map shows Lorain Ave is clear and open at W. 57th.

Mass, St Joseph the Worker, May 1

In 1949, 6 years before establishing the Feast of St Joseph the worker, Pope Pius XII wrote:
It may be said in all truth that the Church, like Christ, goes through the centuries doing good to all. There would be today neither Socialism nor Communism if the rulers of the nations had not scorned the teachings and maternal warnings of the Church. On the bases of liberalism and laicism they wished to build other social edifices which, powerful and imposing as they seemed at first, all too soon revealed the weakness of their foundations, and today are crumbling one after another before our eyes, as everything must crumble that is not grounded on the one corner stone which is Christ Jesus.

Then, in 1955, the venerable pontiff set forth the Feast to counter the violent "May Day" demonstrations fashioned by communists, announcing instead the holy dignity of man in his labor. Pope Pius XII saw atheistic communists sabotaging the meaning of work. They decried it as demeaning to humans, crumbling that social edifice of society. This conflicts greatly with Catholic thought: work is a labor of love and union with the Divine Builder Himself. "Unless the Lord build the house, they labor in vain that build it."

From a Friend:

There will be a Choral Offering of hymns and chants by Cantualis of Cleveland at ST Stephens Catholic Church on Tuesday May 15th 2018 at 7:30pm
Cantualis is a new choir born of  a desire to offer musicians in the community an opportunity to learn 12th to 21st century liturgical music and to hone the skills necessary to present offerings such as Lessons and Carols, Tenebrae, Vespers, Compline and Masses. In doing so they provide a valuable service to the community while simultaneously enriching their faith and developing a passion for music of substance.

The Relics of the Passion is the signature collection of the Apostolate for Holy relics. Reviewed and authenticated by Church authorities prior to their first public tour in 2007, the Relics of the Passion have been venerated in more than 20 dioceses in the United States, Guam and the Philippines, where more than a million people came to see and venerate the rare relics. Although the presentation and veneration of the relics has remained the same, the supporting program that highlights the events of Our Lord's Passion has been gradually enhanced over the years and now provides for a one-hour meditative program with supporting musical pieces. Having a number of significant holy relics in one place is relatively rare and does not often take place outside the Holy Land or Rome. The faithful have continually exhibited a significant level of participation and have conveyed sincere words of appreciation for the positive spiritual experience they have had during and after attending our programs.

Memento Mori

Memento Mori

Today the Church gives us the opportunity to remember and meditate upon our mortality, memento mori: remember death. We receive ashes today, remembering that we came from dust, and unto dust we shall return, without any of the riches of this world, only with the testimony of our faith and works.

Vanitas Paintings

The 16th and 17th centuries brought forth works of art which paint beautifully the words of Sacred Scripture: Vanity of vanities, all is vanity (Ecclesiastes 1:2). These paintings typically depicted items of worldly wealth and beauty, but then contrasted with an image of death, usually a skull.

The modern world would think this is depressing or morbid. Historically, Christians didn't think so. Saints have been depicted as being deep in thought, prayer or work, with a skull before them. Memento mori was motivational for them, helping them in the spiritual life.

St. Jerome

St. Catherine of Siena

St. Francis of Assisi

St. Aloysius Gonzaga

Consider these words of Thomas a Kempis, from The Imitation of Christ.
Very soon the end of your life will be at hand: consider, therefore, the state of your soul. Today a man is here; tomorrow he is gone.(I Machabees 2:63) And when he is out of sight, he is soon out of mind. Oh, how dull and hard is the heart of man, which thinks only of the present, and does not provide against the future! You should order your every deed and thought, as though today were the day of your death. Had you a good conscience, death would hold no terrors for you; (Luke 12:37) even so, it were better to avoid sin than to escape death. (Wisdom 4:16) If you are not ready to die today, will tomorrow find you better prepared? (Matthew 24:44) Tomorrow is uncertain; and how can you be sure of tomorrow? Of what use is a long life, if we amend so little? Alas, a long life often adds to our sins rather than to our virtue!
May you and your family have a most blessed and holy Lent.

Death of the Sinner

It may be of benefit for us to ponder the words of St. Alphonsus as we begin this Lenten season of self sacrifice, conversion and spiritual growth.

Candlemas, Feb 2

Friday, Feb 2, 2018, is Candlemas Day, also known as the Feast of the Presentation of Our Blessed Lord and the Purification of the Blessed Virgin Mary. As announced in the previous post, there is an organized effort to encourage Catholics to say a special Rosary for the Purification of the Church and the triumph of Our Lord. What a special day to pray and hear Mass, a very Solemn and Pious celebration of Holy Mass, for possibly the most important intention we could ever have in these malicious times!

Rosary to the Interior, For the Purification of the Church

An important event is being promoted for February 2, Candlemas Day, also known as the Presentation of Our Lord and Purification of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Full details can be found at Rosary to the Interior.

On February 2, 2018, which is the day celebrating the double Feast of the Presentation of Jesus in the Temple and the Purification of the Blessed Virgin Mary (also called Candlemas), there will occur throughout the  United States the gathering of faithful in their parish churches  to pray the Rosary for the intention of the Purification of the Church, and the Triumph of the Light of Christ over all sin and error.

And also...

The Church has now been penetrated by a darkness greater than at any time in its history – not only the darkness of sexual sins and other moral “filth”, but that which consists of every conceivable form of error masking itself as truth, and of darkness masquerading as light. The task of unmasking these “thoughts”, and thus paving the way to the Triumph of the Truth of Christ, has been entrusted to Mary. Most specifically, it has been entrusted to Our Lady of the Rosary.
Daily we see the evil in the world. Daily we pray for an end to these evils. Daily we see them increase.....

We are at a point in the history of the Church in which none of the normal apostolates which sustain the life of the Church – catechesis, proper intellectual formation, all sorts of organizations in defense of faith and morals, apologetics, etc. seem to possess the power to resist and defeat the enemy, who is always encroaching and making progress against what appear to be even our best defenses (including the rosary). We pray the rosary “against” Islamic jihad, secularism, abortion, and all those forces and institutions which wage war against all that we hold sacred (including Marriage and the Family), and we pray the rosary “for” an end to these things. And yet they continue to advance, seemingly at a geometrically increasing pace. We must ask why.

Ummmmm....yeah....why?....

The answer consists in that truth which has been succinctly expressed in a great many ways by such Popes as Pius IX, Leo XIII, and Pope Pius X: namely, that only the Catholic Church possesses the light and the power to build, nourish, and protect Christian civilization. And, tragically, this power and light has now been weakened and dimmed to a point that the Church has largely been reduced to the status of a minor character and victim upon the world stage. The salt has lost its savour, the light is hidden, the bride befouled. And what is most debilitating about this interior pollution, both within our individual selves and the Church as a whole, is that it is self-perpetuating and increasingly blinding. The more compromised with the world we become, the greater becomes the hidden guilt which causes us to be obsessed with the enemy without, rather than doing what is necessary to restore the light within.
Bingo!

Epiphany, January 6, Masses

Saturday, January 6, is the Feast of the Epiphany.

Masses:

8am Low Mass
Immaculate Conception

9:30am Solemn High
St. Stephen
-includes chanting of Kalends and blessing of Chalk for home blessings

12pm Solemn High
Immaculate Conception
-includes chanting of Kalends and blessing of Chalk for home blessings

A good explanation of the Epiphany chalk tradition can be found on One Peter Five.

 Here is the domestic liturgy:

Prayer:On entering the home,Leader(Priest, if present, or father of the family) : Peace be to this house.
All: And to all who dwell herein.
All: From the east came the Magi to Bethlehem to adore the Lord; and opening their treasures they offered precious gifts: gold for the great King, incense for the true God, and myrrh in symbol of His burial.
All Pray: The Magnificat. During the Magnificat, the room is sprinkled with holy water and incensed. After this is completed,All: From the east came the Magi to Bethlehem to adore the Lord; and opening their treasures they offered precious gifts: gold for the great King, incense for the true God, and myrrh in symbol of His burial.
Leader: Our Father. . .
And lead us not into temptation
All: But deliver us from evil.
Leader: All they from Saba shall come
All: Bringing gold and frankincense.
Leader: O Lord, hear my prayer.
All: And let my cry come to You.
Leader: Let us pray. O God, who by the guidance of a star didst on this day manifest Thine only-begotten Son to the Gentiles, mercifully grant that we who know Thee by faith may also attain the vision of Thy glorious majesty. Through Christ our Lord.
All: Amen.
Leader: Be enlightened, be enlightened, O Jerusalem, for thy light is come, and the glory of the Lord is risen upon thee—Jesus Christ born of the Virgin Mary.
All: And the Gentiles shall walk in thy light and kings in the splendor of thy rising, and the glory of the Lord has risen upon thee.
Leader: Let us pray.
Bless, + O Lord God almighty, this home, that in it there may be health, purity, the strength of victory, humility, goodness and mercy, the fulfillment of Thy law, the thanksgiving to God the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit. And may this blessing remain upon this home and upon all who dwell herein. Through Christ our Lord.
All: Amen.
After the prayers of the blessing are recited, each room of the home is sprinkled with Epiphany water and incensed. The initials of the Magi are inscribed upon the doors with the blessed chalk. (The initials, C, M, B, can also be interpreted as the Latin phrase “Christus mansionem benedicat” which means “Christ bless this house”.)Example: 20 + C + M + B + 18
