Shrove Tuesday, or as is more commonly known today, Fat Tuesday. The day before Lent begins. Also known as Pancake Tuesday.
The Monday and Tuesday before Ash Wednesday is known as Shrovetide, from the Old English word shrive, meaning "to confess." It was traditional for Catholics to go to confession on these days to prepare for Lent. Just as Catholics would clean out their pantry and use up fats, eggs and butter (pancakes), preparing for the penitential fast during Lent, a cleansing of the soul was needed to begin Lent spiritually fresh. We are reminded that St. Stephen's has a 7am Low Mass on Tuesdays.
