Veneration, The Relic of St. Stephen, Protomartyr

And they crying out with a loud voice, stopped their ears, and with one accord ran violently upon him. And casting him forth without the city, they stoned him; and the witnesses laid down their garments at the feet of a young man, whose name was Saul. And they stoned Stephen, invoking, and saying: Lord Jesus, receive my spirit. And falling on his knees, he cried with a loud voice, saying: Lord, lay not this sin to their charge. And when he had said this, he fell asleep in the Lord. And Saul was consenting to his death.
Acts 7: 56-59

Relic of St. Stephen, the First Martyr;

And centuries later, the same Stephen would be treated much differently, having a glorious structure built in his name and to his honor. Honored so much, in fact, so as to be placed at the foot of the Cross.

High Altar; St. Stephen at the Foot, not St. John;

And as custom, following the solemn celebration of the Holy Sacrifice on that ordained day, the 26th of December, the Faithful of Christ piously approach the rail from which they just received Him, to venerate with a kiss --not from treason, but from love-- that holy relic of St. Stephen, the Protomartyr.

Happy Christmas!

Come, Ye Gentiles

Alleluia, alleluia. A sanctified day hath shone upon us; come, ye Gentiles, and adore the Lord; for this day a great light hath descended upon the earth. Alleluia.

The Alleluia verse from the Third Mass on Christmas Day in the TLM is very powerful and provocative. It seems to foresee the coming of the Magi at Epiphany, which is the revelation of the Messiah to the Gentiles, the world outside of the Jews.

Could this apply to us?

And not only that, but the emphasis given to light is also full of meaning. Light, after all, shines in the darkness. And this newly delivered Light, the Light from the womb of the Our Lady, has in fact descended up on.

Merry Christmas!

A Christmas Message

Fr. Willie Doyle, a Jesuit and World War I chaplain for the 16th Irish Division, wrote a wonderful letter at Christmas to his sister. The letter spoke of his deep thoughts about his life as this chaplain, which he said he "dreaded most" and "was angry" at Our Lord for sending him to that Front.

He tells of some truly gruesome moments, but then blesses us with his true point: sacrifice yourselves, in union with the Divine Babe, the Divine Victim; let this be your gift to Jesus in the manger.

We invite you to share this video with your family and friends.

MQP Bulletin Announcement: Rorate Mass, Dec 14

A Friend notified us of the following, as found in the recent bulletin from Mary Queen of Peace parish.

On Saturday, December 14th at 8 am, I will be offering a “Rorate Mass”.

What is a Rorate Mass? I provide for you these words from the Fraternity of Saint Peter website who provide an excellent description:
“The Rorate Caeli Mass is a traditional Advent devotion wherein the Mass of the Blessed Virgin Mary for Advent is offered just before dawn. In many instances families and individuals travel an hour or more, rising and arriving very early for this stunningly beautiful Mass. The interplay of light and darkness speak to the meaning of Advent and the coming of the Light of the world. The Mass takes its title, Rorate Caeli, from the first words of the Introit, which are from Isaiah 45:8: ‘Rorate, caeli, desuper, et nubes pluant justum, aperiatur terra, et germinet Salvatorem.’“Drop down dew, ye heavens, from above, and let the clouds rain the just: let the earth be opened and bud forth a Saviour.”The Rorate Mass is lit only by candlelight. Because it is a votive Mass in Mary’s honor, white vestments are worn instead of Advent violet. In the dimly lit setting, priests and faithful prepare to honor the Light of the world, Who is soon to be born, and offer praise to God for the gift of Our Lady. As the Mass proceeds and sunrise approaches, the church becomes progressively brighter, illumined by the sun as our Faith is illumined by Christ. The readings and prayers of the Mass foretell the prophecy of the Virgin who would bear a Son called Emmanuel, and call on all to raise the gates of their hearts and their societies to let Christ the King enter; asking for the grace to receive eternal life by the merits of the Incarnation and saving Resurrection of Our Lord."
Please join us for the very special Latin Mass offered only once each year. May your Advent continue to be blessed.
Yours in Christ,
Father Brown

Solemn Mass, Feast of the Immaculate Conception

The Feast of the Immaculate Conception falls on Sunday this year. In a way, we should be extra thankful, because it IS a Sunday, and not a weekday, wherein we can more fully celebrate this glorious day. Most of us will not be at work, consumed with the normal we experience during the week. Instead, its completely open to us to observe this feast day, indeed as all days of precept should be, in the manner the Church encourages and wants for us.

Recently, someone on the internet (can't quite remember who it was, perhaps Dr. Taylor Marshall) recommended making this feast day equal to or better than Thanksgiving Day. Truly, we have no reason to not do this. Its Sunday. Most of us aren't scheduled to work that day or go to school. So celebrate it highly, gloriously, gathering together your family. Feast.

Regular Schedule of Sunday Masses:

8am Low Mass
Immaculate Conception, Cleveland

9:30am High Mass
St. Stephen, Cleveland

*12pm Solemn Mass
Immaculate Conception, Cleveland
(Eucharistic Procession after Mass and light luncheon)

1pm High Mass
St. Sebastian, Akron

Claimed By Love, Dec 21

A Friend notified us through Twitter that
There is a Catholic young adult gathering entitled Claimed by Love which will be held on Saturday, December 21st at the Center for Pastoral Life.

Of particular interest to TLM Faithful is that
One of the breakout sessions, which will be led by Fr. Matt Pfeifer, will be on the TLM, Extraordinary Form of the Latin Mass.

Our Friend went on further:
The event can be found on Facebook. Please share as we would like to have a good turnout, especially for Father Pfiefer. Thanks & God bless

If Cleveland TLM Friends receives any other information on this, we'll share it.

Thanksgiving Day TLM

So what is the best thanksgiving practice for a Catholic? The offering of the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass. After all, its one of the four ends of Holy Mass.

Fitting and Proper Worship

The feast of Christ the King was a spectacular day at St. Stephen's. Every year, the German choir joins the Latin schola for this special day.

Remembering this day brought up a phrase used by Mr. Mark Langley during our interview we did with him on education. Denzinger's Dilemna: On Education and The True Purpose of Education

"The Fitting and Proper Worship of God." Those were his words, and we couldn't think of a better example than this Mass.

The ultimate act that any human being can perform is the fitting and proper worship of God. -Mr. Mark Langley, academic dean of The Lyceum

Eternal Father

Today is the feast of St. Gertrude the Great. During this month of November, the Church has given us the task of remembering the Church Suffering, those souls being cleansed through fire in Purgatory, destined for the Beatific Vision.

St. Gertrude, a mystic of the 13th century, had a particularly deep relationship with Our Lord and compassion for the souls in Purgatory. Jesus communicated to her that every time she prayed for these souls, 1000 would be released, their suffering eased, and welcomed into heaven.

Her prayer was addressed to God the Father. St. Stephen's has a fantastic statue of Our Eternal Father, high above the sanctuary and altar of sacrifice, flanked by two adoring angels holding thuribles, doubtlessly offering incense to their Creator.

A fitting image for today. The incense of the world burns toward idolatry. True sweetness ascends to the Father, to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost.

At your next High Mass, consider offering incense and prayer to the Eternal Father for the souls suffering in Purgatory.

Eternal Father, I offer Thee the Most Precious Blood of Thy Divine Son, Jesus, in union with the masses said throughout the world today, for all the holy souls in purgatory, for sinners everywhere, for sinners in the universal church, those in my own home and within my family. Amen.
*the original prayer was only for the souls in purgatory.

Calendar for November

Here’s a great resource for TLM Faithful in Cleveland.

Fr Doug Brown, pastor of Mary Queen of Peace, has put together a calendar with all the Latin Masses, their times and locations. A quick glance, and you should notice there is a TLM every day of the month. This was truly a great idea! Thank you, Father!

A couple of things to note: St Sebastian’s mass for All Saints Day is high mass, not low. Also, we don’t believe St Rocco’s first Sunday mass is solemn, rather, it’s probably high. Cataloging all these different mass times and locations is a huge undertaking.

All Saints and All Souls Days

On the heels of the feast of the King, we also will celebrate His Court. First, we will recall the Church Triumphant, those beholding the Holy Face in heaven. Indeed, they are the best friends of mankind, having direct access to the Blessed Trinity, relaying our prayers and helping us.

Then will we remember the Church Suffering, the souls destined for heaven, but in a state of purification in Purgatory. The Church always advocates for the Faithful to pray for the dead, and this special day set aside for that embodies some of the richest parts of our holy faith.

All Saints Day is, of course, a holy day of obligation. Although All Souls Day is not.....

It is therefore a holy and wholesome thought to pray for the dead, that they may be loosed from sins.

Deathscorting

At Preterm, the abortion mill at 12000 Shaker Blvd in Cleveland, young mothers are lead to the death of their unborn children by women in rainbows vests. Its saddening and frightful.

The short film below contains footage from 10/19/2019. As you will see, its all from the public walkways, all visible by anyone passing by or pausing to breath. Some days and some hours are more eventful than others, but the stench is the same. And the shear joy on their faces, those guardians of gore, as young women approach, full of malicious intent or indoctrinated confusion; its the epitome of hell on earth.

Pray for these women and the young mothers. Pray for the shuttering of this death chamber. Pray for the witnesses who take up the Cross on the sidewalks to counter this death culture. They are an essential element to the battle.

In the end, Her Immaculate Heart will triumph.

Long live Christ the King.

Remission of the Sin of Abortion, Oct 26

Rev Bede Kotlinski, OSB, will once again offer the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass for the remission of the sin of abortion. The flyer below was made by a Friend, and is printer friendly in black and white, and color too. Pass it on, pass it out.

Mass Time Change for Oct 19

Fr. Bede wants you all to know that the Saturday Latin Mass at St. Elizabeth on Oct. 19, 2019, will be at 8am. The Mass is usually at 9am. This time change effects ONLY this particular date. The normal schedule will resume the following week, Saturday, Oct 26, at 9am.

And a special note about Oct 26: another Mass for the remission of the sin of abortion. A mass for this cause was held back in July of this year. Recently, Cleveland TLM Friends received unconfirmed reports that Preterm has experienced some troubling circumstances within since the occasion of that first Mass for the remission of the sin. We should not be surprised by that, if its true. We are reminded that the first step in cleansing a filthy soul is contrition, followed by confession. Simply asking for a clean slate is not enough. Why would it be any different for the blackened soul of our nation?

Upcoming Events at MQP

Tradition is NOT a Museum. Period.

As a sentiment shared by more than a few who attended St. Stephen's 150th Anniversary celebration, this is put forth for your consideration.

Noticeable upon entering the church were the vestments hanging on the columns. Beautiful in their own right, the copes were displayed for the edification of the faithful, no doubt. But where have we seen such items displayed for an observer's benefit?

Museums come to mind. All know, it is presumed, that ancient artifacts are commonly placed high, on pedestals even, for curious minds to enjoy and study. You see this in museums of natural history, and museums of our holy priests, too. The vestment below is that of Fr. Nelson Baker, from Our Lady of Victory National Shrine and Basilica in Lackawanna, NY.

Father Baker was an absolute treasure to that largely Catholic town. He is remembered well, indeed; an entire collection of his personal belongings are frozen in time in a museum under the Shrine. Some might think of him as a type of St. John Bosco for the town that loved him.

Reverend Nelson Baker is dead. His vestments aren't used. They are displayed, remembered, not used anymore. Would Fr. Baker's vestments have ever been displayed when he was alive on this earth? We can't think of any such instance of this.

Now look at the photos below. The copes are being used. And these photos are not from the archives of times remembered. No, they are from the here and now, the times of today, in full use, just as the patriarchs of St. Stephen's used them.

At least one well-intended-individual commented that these items, along with the precious monstrances the parish owns, are not used anymore, that they are pulled from the vault of the past, for the memorial of these 150 years of the church.

Friends, nothing could be further from the truth. The Faith, and all its trappings, is alive and well, especially at Historic St. Stephen Church. And not just there, but at every Traditional Latin Mass around the world.

Retired sports jerseys hang from rafters and hold a venerable place in the hearts and minds of fans. But make no mistake, these holy vestments continue to be worn by the heroes of today, as they bring Calvary to the senses of the Faithful.

Support your local Traditional Latin Mass, and also pray for the canonization of Fr. Nelson Baker.

Add to Your Morning Prayers

Many thanks to a Friend for sending in this amazing prayer.

A Prayer for Priests

O Jesus, Eternal Priest, keep Thy servants within the
shelter of Thy Sacred Heart, where none may harm them.
Keep unstained their anointed hands, which daily touch
Thy Sacred Body. Keep unsullied their lips, purpled
with Thy Precious Blood. Keep pure and unearthly their
their hearts, sealed with the sublime mark of Thy glorious
Priesthood. Let Thy holy love surround them and shield
them from the the world's contagion. Bless their labors
with abundant fruit, and may the souls to whom they
minister be here below their joy and consolation, and in
Heaven their beautiful and everlasting crown. Amen

The True Purpose of Education; The Crisis in Catholic Schools

Previously, Cleveland TLM Friends released an episode of Denzinger's Dilemnas about education, according to the mind of His Holiness Pope Pius XI. That episode featured a short excerpt of an interview with Mr. Mark Langley, the academic dean of The Lyceum in South Euclid, OH. It was only a snippet of Mr. Langley's wisdom, and so here is the entirety of that exclusive interview.

Two-Day TLM Workshop, For Priests ONLY

Cleveland TLM Friends has been notified that there is local interest in bringing a Latin Mass workshop offered by Extraordinary Faith to Cleveland for priests who are interested in learning to celebrate the Traditional Mass. The group is located in Detroit, but they do not expect you to go there; they will come to you.

Best of all, celebrant training is provided at no charge anywhere in North America as part of our apostolate. Even the travel expenses will be covered. There is only one requirement: Clergy taking us up on this offer must commit to holding Mass in the Extraordinary Form at least once per month, for at least three months, commencing within two months of our visit.

Again, this is for priests only. If you are a priest here in Cleveland, and you're interested in learning to celebrate the Traditional Latin Mass, you may contact us, and we will then put you in touch with the relevant party.

To Bow or Look, My Lord and My God

If one were to ever very subtly look around his or her parish at the time of the Consecration and Elevation, its most likely that various pious practices would be observed. Everything from looking at Our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament, to bowing the head, to striking breasts and making Signs of the Cross. All of this is done with piety, with love and devotion to Jesus. None of it is wrong, in any way. But may we ask what we should be doing?

Under the pontificate of His Holiness, Pope St. Pius X, the Sacred Congregation of Indulgences issued an answer to this very question, as found in the Raccolta. This version is from 1910.

116. Ejaculation.
i. Seven Years and Seven Quarantines.* T.Q. ii. Plenary, once a week, if used daily, II.* (See Instructions.)
116 Pius X, May 18, 1907.
DOMINUS meus, et DEUS meus. My LORD and my GOD.
*These words are to be said with faith, piety, and love, while looking upon the Blessed Sacrament, either during the Elevation in the Mass, or when exposed on the altar.

Consider that, at the time, indulgences were counted in days and years. This can translate to current norms of partial and plenary, if that helps.

Interestingly, a particular missal instructs the reader to say those very words at the Elevation of  the Sacred Body, and then suggests the following for the Elevation of the Precious Blood.

Be mindful, O Lord, of thy creature, whom Thou hast redeemed by Thy Most Precious Blood.
It would be wonderful to teach children this practice. If the belief and understanding of the teaching on the Real Presence is truly reflected in these recent, dire, poll results, then simple catechism like this can begin to effect change. And if all we can accomplish is some personal time off purgatory, then that's probably good enough. We'll take it!

Wonderful Old Chapel

Check out this beautiful little chapel located inside the castle fort at Old Fort Niagara. It wonderfully represents the Traditional Latin Mass. How many Catholics today, who visit this place, have an understanding of why the chapel is set up like this? Would they wonder about the missing table? The railing and kneeler?

The fort was constructed by the French in the 1700’s. It subsequently changed hands to the British and then the Americans. We can safely assumed it’s been the better part of 300 hundred years says the Blessed Eucharist has been present inside this chapel. But one can feel the remnants of His Presence. All the blood shed at this fort, and it’s the unbloody shedding of Holy Mass that stirs the heart and brings the past alive here in this small place....at least for Faithful Catholics.

On Education, Denzinger's Dilemnas

What does Athens have to do with Jerusalem? What does Math have to do with the worship of God? Pope Pius XI authored a wonderful encyclical on education, entitled "Divini Illius Magistri." In it, he points the direction of man's educational path to man's final end, and it includes his end here on earth: the fitting and proper worship of God through the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass. Dignum et iustum est. Rational worship.

Premier of Denzinger's Dilemnas

A new series Cleveland TLM Friends is presenting on YouTube is Denzinger's Dilemnas. These brief expositions of various entries from Denzinger's Sources of Catholic Dogma will, we hope, inspire faithful Catholics to delve deeper into the perennial teachings of Holy Mother Church.

Our premier episode is about a decree issued by Pope Eugene IV at the time of the Council of Florence, 1439. The pope addressed the sacrament of Baptism, and its utter necessity in attaining eternal life.

The video is under 2 minutes in length. Please pass it along.

Traditional Catholic House?

A message from a Friend.

Traditional Catholic House?
Are there any unmarried men (age 18-above) who are interested in living together as an informal community/fraternity?
We are gauging interest in a possible situation where several men live in the same house.  They would each hold down a job and pay rent.  Fraternity and living a virtuous life would be the goal.  The atmosphere would foster prayer, discernment, detachment from worldliness, service to a TLM parish, and traditional Catholic values.  Some people call these discernment houses or disciple houses.  We look to start one around August of 2020, one year from now.
Anyone interested in discussing this further should contact Matt Lewis at matt.lewis@yandex.com

August Guide to the Cleveland Latin Masses

August is upon us. Its a particularly interesting month from our perspective, liturgically speaking. There are some pretty big feast days, and some of our favorite saints are celebrated this month. And a challenge is issued at the very bottom of this post.

A Friend of the TLM from Twitter put together this nice calendar, showcasing the month and its schedule of Masses. Thanks, @Sebasti77107923 !

A couple of things to note, though, that are not on the schedule.

August 14, the Vigil of the Assumption
Solemn High Mass @ 7pm
Assumption parish, Broadview Heights

August 15, Feast of the Assumption
Solemn High Mass @ 6:30pm
St. Stephen

The Feast of the Transfiguration is Tuesday, August 6. Of course, St. Stephen has a TLM at 7am.

Among the Saints who are celebrated this month that we find particularly special (and we know that sounds bad; they all are special) are:

St. Laurence, 2nd Class
Vigil Aug 9
Feast Aug 10
(Incidentally, St. Laurence is a rarity. Not many Saints get a Vigil in their honor, and not many are a second class feast. Most are third class. Perhaps the Church particularly appreciated his humor.)

St. Joachim
Aug 16

St. Bernard
Aug 20

Immaculate Heart of Mary
Aug 22

St. Augustine
Aug 28

Beheading of St. John the Baptist
Aug 29

St. Rose of Lima (remember the Latin Masses over there?)
Aug 30

St. Raymond Nonnatus
Aug 31
(a saint for pro-lifers, for sure)

If you've got one to mention, comment below.

Up for a Challenge?

The Vigilant Vigil'er

Two opportunities exist this month to attend a Vigil and its corresponding Feast Day. Pick one, either St. Laurence or the Assumption, and go both days.

Only half of American Catholic's Know the Teaching???

A recent Tweet by a Friend, @CLECatholic, prompted this. An article from 2017 reported that only 50% of American Catholics know the Church's teaching on the Eucharist. Inadequate post conciliar education was blamed, but then also the question itself, for being tricky, supposedly. We propose that it wasn't a trick question necessarily, but rather a sobering piece of evidence that our common liturgical prayer is not infusing our senses and mind with the faith. As controversial as this may be, we feel its important.

Important Cultural Battle, Holy Mass

None of you need to be reminded or lectured about the sin of abortion. Our nation has been ruined by a culture of death. Have you ever read Romans 1? Has Almighty God abandoned us to our own devices, as He did to that society? Eternal questions; we know not the true answer.

So what can remedy this sin of abortion? In short, the Father sent His Son for the remission of all sin. The most efficacious prayer this side of heaven is the Most Beautiful Thing This Side of Heaven. We can truly offer to the Father His Son in the representation of the sacrifice on Calvary. And we will offer Him for the remission of that sin, that crime of abortion.

More TLM News

In addition to the Independence Day Mass at St Stephen, at 7am, Immaculate Conception will have Mass at 8am for the holiday.

And for those who plan to attend the Tuesday morning Masses at St Stephen, which are normally at 6:45am, Fr Bede has moved the time to 7am, for the duration of the summer. This new time will end when Benedictine High School resumes classes for 2019/2020. Cleveland TLM Friends will update you when that happens.

TLM News for July

July will kick off with the Feast of the Precious Blood on Monday, July 1. Of course, Immaculate Conception offers the Holy Sacrifice on Mondays at 7am.

Independence Day will follow on Thursday, and Mass at St Stephen's will be at 7am instead of 6:30pm, as it is regularly celebrated

Furthermore, we have the normal observance of First Friday and First Saturday this week, July 5 and 6. The regular schedule of those Masses is unchanged.

On Saturday July 13, the second Saturday of the month, there will NOT BE a 9am Mass at St. Elizabeth. However, the third and fourth Saturdays, July 20 and 27, remain unchanged: Mass at 9am at St. Elizabeth.

Pride

Pride is an interesting concept in this month dedicated to the Sacred Heart, which, in effect, has been hijacked by those attached to the sodomitical revolution.

Is it unreasonable to expect that a culture of self-absorption would adopt the word “pride” to denote their devotion? And what might self-absorption have necessarily to do with sodomy? In short, it’s the root cause, so says St Paul.

In his letter to the Romans, St Paul addresses this very type of sin, and explains that it was the rejecting of God and focusing on self that delivered them up to their own shameful affections.

1:21 Because that, when they knew God, they have not glorified him as God or given thanks: but became vain in their thoughts.  And their foolish heart was darkened.

Vain, vanity, pride.

1:23 And they changed the glory of the incorruptible God into the likeness of the image of a corruptible man and of birds, and of fourfooted beasts and of creeping things.

How true! We worship ourselves. We believe animals to be equal, nay, even better than people.

1:25 Who changed the truth of God into a lie and worshipped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed for ever. Amen.
And St Paul goes on to describe the manifestation self absorption....

1:26 For this cause, God delivered them up to shameful affections. For their women have changed the natural use into that use which is against nature.
1:27 And, in like manner, the men also, leaving the natural use of the women, have burned in their lusts, one towards another: men with men, working that which is filthy and receiving in themselves the recompense which was due to their error.

St Paul concludes with a litany of all the sins which accompany this rejection of the Incorruptible God. It’s quite evident our generation suffers from this.

As we near the end of this month dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Humility Himself, pray especially hard for peace in our families, purity in children, conversion of sinners, justice upon criminals, purification of the Church, and while you’re at it, the reclaiming of the Rainbow. It’s rightfully God’s.

Apocalypse
10:1 And I saw another mighty angel come down from heaven, clothed with a cloud. And a rainbow was on his head: and his face, as the sun, and his feet as pillars of fire.

Organist Position Available

Fr Doug Brown, a Friend of the TLM and pastor of Mary Queen of Peace in Cleveland, is currently seeking an organist to fill their Director of Music position at the parish.

Incidentally, Fr Brown is the celebrant for St Stephen’s Corpus Christi Mass this Thursday.

It is Cleveland TLM Friends’  understanding that a tradition-minded individual with an affection for the TLM would be a good fit for the position at MQP.
