Two Lungs, Two Events

A message from a friend of the TLM....

The Church breathes through two lungs, the East and the West.  A Catholic exchange - two events .

ONE
The Byzantine Catholic Community has been invited to come and experience the Traditional Latin Mass at St. Stephen Church on Thursday, May 9th at 6:30pm.  Come see the ancient liturgy and hear the Gregorian chant of the Roman Catholics as we celebrate the Feast of the Ascension of Christ into Heaven.

TWO
Fr. Richard J. Plishka, of the Byzantine Cultural Center, has invited the St. Stephen Roman Catholic Community to experience the Byzantine Liturgy and share in the celebration of the translation of the relics of two "beati" - two men declared "blessed" in the process of canonization.  Bl. Paul Goidic and Bl. Basil Hopko.  This will be an outstanding event led by the Bishop John Kudrick of the Eparchy of Parma and accompanied by a very skillful choir.  Don't miss this learning experience.

Saturday May 11 at 10am
Byzantine Catholic Cultural Center (Tremont)

Cleveland, Ohio 44113

Please consider attending both events.  Forward this on.

May: Our Blessed Mother

Let us dedicate the month of May to Our Blessed Mother.

Hail, Mary, Mother of God,
venerable treasure of the whole universe,
lamp that is never extinguished,
crown of virginity,
support of the true faith,
indestructible temple,
dwelling of Him whom no place can contain,
O Mother and Virgin!
Through you all the holy Gospels
call blessed the One whom comes
in the name of the Lord.

Hail, Mother of God.
You enclosed under your heart
the infinite God whom no space can contain.
Through you the Most Holy Trinity is adored and glorified,
the priceless cross is venerated throughout the universe.
Through you the heavens rejoice,
and the angels and archangels are filled with gladness.
Through you the demons are banished,
and the tempter fell from heaven.
Through you the fallen human race is admitted to heaven.

Hail, Mother of God.
Through you kings rule,
and the only-begotten Son of God has become a star of light
to those who were sitting in darkness
and in the shadow of death.

Rogation Days

These three days before Ascension Thursday are traditionally known as Rogation Days. Incidentally, April 25 is also a Rogation day.

Rogationtide is the time appointed by the Church to remember and reflect upon the wrath of Almighty God. These are days of particular prayer, and, formerly, of fasting. Christians would ask for God's protection in calamities, and also for a bountiful harvest. Some rural communities still piously observe Rogation Days.

A few practical things we can do for the Rogation Days:

  • Pray the Litany of the Saints
  • Spend time reflecting on the power of Nature
  • Review accounts of natural disasters, e.g., the stories of Pompeii and the Black Death
In times past, during Rogationtide there would have been processions with the chanting of the Litany of the Saints.

April: The Holy Eucharist

Let us dedicate the month of April to The Holy Eucharist.

As the hart panteth after the fountains of water,
so my soul panteth after Thee, O God!
"My soul hath thirsted after the strong, living God;
when shall I come and appear before the face of God?"
"For what have I in heaven?
And besides Thee, what do I desire on earth?"
Let blind and infatuated worldlings intoxicate themselves
with the false, transient, and fading happiness of this life;
for my part, nothing besides Thyself can content me,
either in heaven or on earth.
Come then, O Thou Lamb of God,
Who takest away the sins of the world!
Come, Thou beloved of my heart!
Adorable Flesh and precious Blood of my Saviour!
Come, to nourish, comfort, and enliven my sickly soul.
O God of my heart!
Let me neither love, seek, nor think
of any other object but Thyself alone;
for Thou alone art my consolation,
my treasure, my joy, my life, my all!

"My heart and my flesh have rejoiced in the living God...
Thou art, O Lord of hosts! My King and my God!"
"Who will give me wings like a dove and I will fly and be at rest!"

Feast of St. Joseph, Mar 19

The wonderful feast of St. Joseph is Tuesday, Mar 19. In honor of that day, Immaculate Conception Cleveland will have a low Mass at 6pm and St. Stephen will have high Mass at 6:30pm.

O GUARDIAN of Virgins and holy Father St. Joseph, into
whose faithful keeping were entrusted Christ Jesus, Innocence
Itself, and Mary, Virgin of virgins, I pray and beseech thee by these
dear pledges, Jesus and Mary, that, being preserved from all uncleanness,
I may with spotless mind, pure heart and chaste body, ever serve Jesus and Mary most chastely all the days of my life. Amen.

A Sermon by St. Bernardine of Siena
This is the general rule that applies to all individual graces given to a rational creature. Whenever divine grace selects someone to receive a particular grace, or some especially favoured position, all the gifts for his state are given to that person, and. enrich him abundantly.
This is especially true of that holy man Joseph, the supposed father of our Lord Jesus Christ, and true husband of the queen of the world and of the angels. He was chosen by the eternal Father to be the faithful foster-parent and guardian of the most precious treasures of God, his Son and his spouse. This was the task which he so faithfully carried out. For this, the Lord said to him, "Good and faithful servant, enter into the joy of your Lord."
A comparison can be made between Joseph and the whole Church of Christ. Joseph was the specially chosen man through whom and under whom Christ entered the world fittingly and in an appropriate way. So, if the whole Church is in the debt of the Virgin Mary, since, through her, it was able to receive the Christ, surely after her, it also owes to Joseph special thanks and veneration.
For he it is who marks the closing of the old testament. In him the dignity of the prophets and patriarchs achieves its promised fulfilment. Moreover; he alone possessed in the flesh what God in his goodness promised to them over and again.
It is beyond doubt that Christ did not deny to Joseph in heaven that intimacy, respect, and high honour which he showed to him as to a father during his own human life, but rather completed and perfected it. Justifiably the words of the Lord should be applied to him, "Enter into the joy of your Lord." Although it is the joy of eternal happiness that comes into the heart of man, the Lord prefers to say to him "enter into joy". The mystical implication is that this joy is not just inside man, but surrounds him everywhere and absorbs him, as if he were plunged in an infinite abyss.
Therefore be mindful of us, blessed Joseph, and intercede for us with Him Whom men thought to be your Son. Win for us the favour of the most Blessed Virgin your spouse, the mother of Him Who lives and reigns with the Holy Spirit through ages unending. Amen.
