Moving to a New Website

Cleveland TLM Friends has moved to a new website. Eleven years ago this blog was started, and it’s time for updating.

Some important things to take note of:

This website will remain on the Internet but no new content or updates will be made here. The contact email address will remain active.

The new website will not have a email subscription service for the foreseeable future. So you will have to bookmark the new site or just go to it at your convenience.

As this is the final blog post/email delivery you will receive from us via this web address, I want to thank you all for the support, help and prayers over the years.

Feast of the Annunciation from 2009

Today the Archangel Gabriel knocked on the door to Our Lady’s immaculate heart, announcing the forthcoming nativity of Our Lord. The Queen answered, “fiat; let it be done unto me.”

And with that God was made man. And God would go on to suffer like man in so many ways. And God asked that we unite our sufferings with His.

Friends, until we can join again in Orate Fratres, here are some images from this Feast Day back in 2009, at St Stephen Church. We were lucky to find these in our computer folder. Mass was celebrated at the side altar of the Blessed Virgin Mary, by Fr Franz, who was pastor of the parish at that time.

The Traditional Latin Mass seems to be a hot topic for pastors to provide to the faithful. Fr. David Ireland, pastor of Sacred Heart of Jesus parish in South Euclid, OH, dropped us a note asking that his recorded TLM for today be posted.

Fr. Godic's Advice for All of Us

The Holy Sacrifice has been suspended from all public celebration because of Covid-19, the coronavirus. Faithful Catholics are suffering. The sacraments are out of reach. Will the faith deteriorate or grow?

New Live Stream Mass, Immaculate Conception

The Cleveland TLM community is being blessed with the best possible way of continuity during this terrible reality. It was important to not allow this suspension of Masses to have a complete interfere with the greatest thing happening in northeast Ohio. The Traditional Catholic movement is too important to so many families and individuals.

The live stream is from Immaculate Conception, Cleveland. The broadcast schedule is planned for daily Mass.

Monday thru Friday, 6:30pm

Saturday, 9am

Sunday, 12pm

We will be able to access it through www.holysacrifice.org.

Updated Info

Previously, it was posted that some liturgical options might still be available in the Eastern Rites within the Diocese of Cleveland. That has largely changed. The most comprehensive update we have for liturgical possibilities is the following:

All of the Maronite Liturgies have been cancelled.
All of the Byzantine Liturgies have been cancelled.
Ukrainian Catholic churches are awaiting a directive and won't know until the end of the week.
St. Elias:  Still waiting to hear
St. Peregrine:  Still waiting to hear

St. Peregrine is NOT an Eastern Rite Catholic Church. The chapel is part of the Society of St. Pius X. It is not clear if the Mass will still be available there, publicly.

Confession, "Any time"

The Diocese of Cleveland had initially declared that the Sacrament of Confession would only be limited to "being in danger of death."

Since that statement, the Diocese has revised its policy, providing the Faithful with access to the Sacrament of Confession "any time."

This seems to be a move in the right direction, ever mindful of what our Faith teaches us, namely, that the care of the soul is more important than the care of the body. While it can seem discouraging that Holy Mass is not available to us, the Faithful have at moments throughout history experienced this terrible reality. We can be hopeful* that the Omnipotent Creator of all things has not and will not abandon us.

*Theological hope is not wishful thinking; its an act of confidence.

St John the Baptist, Canton: TLM

Thanks to a Friend on Twitter for getting this out. The Basilica of St John the Baptist in Canton, OH, will be offering a TLM low Mass on the Saturdays of Lent. As stated in their bulletin, a group of parishioners joined together to petition for this Mass to be available. A stable group and a pastor of good will.

Lenten Devotions

Immaculate Conception Cleveland is once again offering TLM Faithful a good and pious practice on the Fridays of Lent, with the opportunity for Confession, Mass and Benediction.

And, as normal, Confessions are always heard before the 9:30am TLM on Sundays at St. Stephen, and also during Holy Hour on Wednesdays, which follow the 6:30pm low Mass.

Ash Wednesday TLM’s

The season of Septuagesima is nearing its end, meaning Lent is approaching. Have you found this current time to be a good preparation for Lent?

Of course, Ash Wednesday is February 26, 2020; less than a week away. Opportunities abound for Faithful Catholics to receive ashes in the traditional form. We are so blessed to be Catholics in Cleveland.

Septuagesima, The Season of Preparation

Friends, this is no ordinary time. Let us prepare ourselves for the holy season of Lent, which will quickly encompass us, as we know time passes swiftly.

"Introduced by three Sundays (Septugesim, Sexagesima, and Quinquagesima), the season of Lent begins on Ash Wednesday and ends with the death of Jesus in Passion Week. The struggle between our Lord and Satan ends with the victory of the Savior at Eastertide. During the period from Septuagesima to Ash Wednesday, the liturgy speaks no more of our greatness but contemplates the misery of fallen humanity, the fatal consequences of original sin and actual sin, and the sacrifice that God asked from the faithful Melchisedech, symbol of the sacrifice that Jesus brings for the whole humanity."

St. Rocco, Sunday TLM's, Needs Help

St. Rocco Church, a lovely Italian parish on Cleveland's westside, has been offering the TLM on First Sunday's for about a year now. Recently, Cleveland TLM Friends came across this notice on Twitter, announcing that the parish will be celebrating the TLM every Sunday at 12pm, and is in need of TLM servers. Please consider passing this along to potentially interested parties.

Candlemas, Feast of the Purification

Tomorrow, Feb 2, is the Feast of the Purification of the BVM, also known as Candlemas. Traditionally, on this day, there is a special ritual for the blessing of candles and then a procession follows.

The full celebration will take place at Immaculate Conception at the 12pm High Mass.

For those attending St. Stephen, please be aware that time constraints will not permit this ritual. Instead, the Faithful may bring candles and hold them up to be sprinkled during the asperges ceremony.

St. Blaise

The Feast of St. Blaise is on Monday, Feb 3. St. Blaise was a physician and bishop, and was beheaded in 316. According to The Acts of St. Blaise, a mother, whose child was choking on a bone in his throat, threw herself at St. Blaise's feet as he was being taken into custody. She implored his intercession for her child, and upon the Saint's prayers, the child was cured.

Immaculate Conception Cleveland offers a 7am Mass every Monday morning.

In anticipation of the feast day,  Fr. Bede will bless throats following the 9:30am Sunday Mass on Feb 2. The faithful are invited to approach the rail after the choir receives communion following Mass. Father will say the intercessory prayer ONCE over the entire congregation, and then proceed to touch throats at the rail. This, again, is due to time constraints.
